The BYD Shark 6 is an upcoming plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute aiming to compete in Australia’s off-road vehicle market. With both electric and petrol capabilities, it promises a distinctive mix of power and versatility. It’s powered by a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with dual electric motors, creating an all-wheel-drive system that provides around 321 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. This setup allows it to travel approximately 80 km on electric power alone and up to 800 km with its petrol support, ideal for both city drives and moderate off-road adventures.

One standout feature is the Shark 6’s “Vehicle-to-Load” (V2L) functionality, which turns the ute into a mobile generator, allowing up to 6.6 kW of power to charge or operate tools and equipment directly from the vehicle’s battery. The Shark 6 also offers spacious interior design, ample tech features, and thoughtful touches like flat rear flooring and accessible USB ports, making it functional for both work and leisure.

Despite its strengths, there are a few limitations for off-road enthusiasts. The Shark 6’s payload and towing capacities—790 kg and 2,500 kg respectively—fall slightly below class leaders like the Ford Ranger or Toyota HiLux, which typically tow up to 3,500 kg. Additionally, its off-road credentials are moderate, as it lacks low-range gearing and uses road-focused suspension that may limit it in tougher terrain. However, for urban and light off-road use, the BYD Shark 6 offers an efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to diesel utes.

As BYD prepares the Shark 6 for market, the final production model may see additional adjustments to better suit Australian drivers' needs. The Shark 6 is expected to appeal to eco-conscious consumers and professionals who want a versatile, hybrid workhorse that stands out from traditional diesel-powered utes
